White House Market
Voluntary ShutdownActive 2019–2021
What Happened
White House Market (WHM) distinguished itself through an aggressive security posture. It was one of the first major markets to mandate Monero as the only accepted cryptocurrency, citing Bitcoin's traceability. PGP encryption was required for all vendor and buyer communications, and the site disabled JavaScript entirely to minimize attack surface. These requirements filtered out less serious users and created a higher-trust environment. WHM grew steadily from 2019 and by mid-2021 had become one of the largest active markets in terms of listings and verified vendors. In October 2021, at or near peak traffic, the operators posted a farewell message announcing voluntary closure. Users were given time to withdraw funds. The operators cited a desire to exit before law enforcement attention grew too intense. No operator arrests or identifications have been confirmed. WHM is frequently cited as a model for responsible market operation and exit.
Key Lessons
- Monero-only and mandatory PGP significantly raise the operational security floor
- Exiting voluntarily at peak — rather than waiting until forced — is the safest strategy
- High security requirements attract more serious users and reduce informant risk
