What Happened

Valhalla — operating in Finnish as Silkkitie — launched in 2013 and became the dominant darknet market serving Finland and the broader Nordic region. The market operated primarily in Finnish, limiting its international footprint but building a very loyal domestic user base. It ran for nearly six years, one of the longer operational lifespans among European markets. Finnish Customs (Tulli) led the investigation with support from Europol, the DEA, and other European agencies. The seizure in February 2019 was coordinated with multiple vendor arrests across Finland. The case demonstrated that language-specific regional markets are not protected by obscurity — Finnish law enforcement proved fully capable of infiltrating and dismantling the operation. Several vendors received significant prison sentences in subsequent Finnish court proceedings.

Key Lessons

  • Language barriers do not protect regional markets from domestic law enforcement
  • Long operational life increases the evidence trail available to investigators
  • Vendor arrests cascading from a market seizure can number in the dozens
