What Happened

ToRReZ Market launched in 2020 and quickly built a reputation for technical quality and vendor support. Its multi-signature escrow — requiring cryptographic agreement from both buyer and vendor before funds were released — reduced administrator theft risk and gave users a higher degree of fund security than conventional escrow markets. The market accepted both Bitcoin and Monero and attracted an active international vendor community. In November 2021, the ToRReZ operators announced they would close in December, giving users several weeks to finalize orders and withdraw balances. The shutdown was completed as promised and funds were returned. The operators cited personal reasons and the increasingly hostile law enforcement environment. ToRReZ is regularly cited alongside White House Market and Cannazon as an example of a market that exited without stealing from its users.

Key Lessons

  • Multi-signature escrow provides meaningful protection against admin theft
  • Giving weeks of notice before closure allows clean fund recovery
  • A track record of honest operation makes voluntary exit more credible
