What Happened

Monopoly Market launched in 2019 and differentiated itself by accepting only Monero — a privacy-focused cryptocurrency — in an effort to prevent the financial tracing that had contributed to the downfall of Bitcoin-based markets. The market grew steadily and had an active vendor and buyer base by 2022. In early 2023, Monopoly Market went offline with no announcement and no withdrawal window, resulting in the loss of user balances. Whether the closure was a deliberate exit scam or an emergency shutdown triggered by law enforcement pressure remains debated. The arrest of Milomir Desnica — a Serbian national — in Vienna in November 2023 as Monopoly's alleged operator suggests the shutdown may have occurred as law enforcement closed in. The US Department of Justice indicted Desnica on drug distribution conspiracy charges. His case demonstrated that Monero-only markets are not immune to traditional investigative techniques targeting operator OPSEC.

Key Lessons

  • Monero removes financial tracing but does not replace operator OPSEC
  • Abrupt shutdowns with no user notice may indicate LE pressure rather than exit scam
  • International cooperation enables arrests across borders regardless of crypto choice
