What Happened

Evolution Market launched in early 2014 as Silk Road 2.0 was winding down, and quickly grew to become one of the two dominant markets alongside Agora. By early 2015 it had over 300 drug categories, a thriving fraud section, and was processing millions of dollars in weekly volume. The operators used the pseudonyms Verto and Kimble and were known within the community for active engagement and market development. In mid-March 2015, Evolution went offline without warning. The operators had transferred all escrow Bitcoin — estimated at approximately $12M — to their personal wallets over the preceding days. The exit was spotted by on-chain analysts who noticed large wallet drains before the site went dark. The Evolution exit scam established a pattern that would be repeated by Empire, Wall Street, and others: grow large, accumulate escrow, then disappear. Neither Verto nor Kimble has ever been identified or arrested.

Key Lessons

  • Active, community-engaged operators are not immune to exit scam temptation
  • On-chain wallet monitoring can detect an exit scam in progress
  • The exit scam template set by Evolution was copied by dozens of later markets
