Dream Market
Operator Shutdown (Suspected Extortion)Active 2013–2019
What Happened
Dream Market was the dominant market from 2017–2019 following the AlphaBay/Hansa double takedown. In early 2019, the market experienced severe DDoS attacks. An anonymous actor demanded a 400,000 EUR payment to stop. On March 26, 2019, Dream Market announced it would close on April 30. A new site (Samsara Market) was announced as a 'partner' — widely believed to be the same operators or an exit setup. Dream's closure left a massive power vacuum that Nightmare, Empire, and Wall Street rushed to fill.
Key Lessons
- DDoS extortion is an existential threat to darknet markets
- Closure announcements are often cover for exit scams or extortion
- Never keep large balances on any market
