DarkMarket
Seized by EuropolActive 2020–2021
What Happened
DarkMarket launched in 2020 and grew rapidly to become, by Europol's own assessment, the largest illegal marketplace on the dark web at the time of its takedown. The platform had approximately 2.4 million registered users, over 500,000 active listings, and had facilitated more than 320,000 transactions worth approximately €140 million ($170M USD) in Bitcoin and Monero. Drugs constituted the majority of listings. The January 2021 operation was coordinated by Europol and Eurojust, with operational support from Germany, Australia, Denmark, Moldova, Ukraine, the UK, and the US. German authorities led the investigation. An Australian national was arrested near Oldenburg as the alleged operator. Over 20 servers were seized across Moldova and Ukraine, yielding a substantial trove of transactional evidence. The takedown was timed to maximize evidence collection before the suspect could destroy data.
Key Lessons
- Server geography — Moldova, Ukraine — did not prevent an effective multi-nation seizure
- 2.4 million registered users means 2.4 million potential witnesses or informants
- Europol's coordination capabilities have expanded significantly since Operation Onymous
