What Happened

Agora was the dominant market following Silk Road's seizure. In August 2015, the operators announced temporary suspension pending security review, citing a research paper on Tor deanonymization attacks. They gave users 14 days to withdraw funds. The market never reopened. This is widely cited as the only major darknet market that shut down responsibly, without stealing user funds or being seized. The operators' identity remains unknown to this day — possibly the only large-scale market operators to have successfully remained anonymous.

Key Lessons

  • A clean shutdown is possible but extraordinarily rare
  • Proactive security audits can prevent catastrophic failures
  • Giving users time to withdraw builds long-term trust
